logo0000000Zero Motorcycles Inc. designs, manufactures, and sells high performance electric motorcycles. The company, formerly known as Electricross, was started in 2006 near Santa Cruz, California. The company was founded by Neal Saiki who was a former NASA engineer and has also won numerous design awards in the sports world.

They are known for their line of dirt bikes and most recently the popular Zero X. They have begun branching out into the street world with a motorcycle called the Zero S (Zero S) which began shipping in 2009.

The Zero S shares some of the same styling cues as its off-road little brother, the previously mentioned Zero X. The motorcycle has highway appropriate tires and a “projector beam” headlight. With a peak horsepower of 31 and 62.5 lb-ft of torque, the clutchless one-speed “Zero S” gets to its top speed of 60 mph in no time. Its four kWh battery can keep you going for up to 60 miles. The intergrated charger allows you to fully charge in less than four hours.

It is very light, and therefore very quick. The battery warning light goes on with about 20 miles to go.

cic_4_color__home_logoIce cream trucks are part of the quintessential American summer. The sound of the Good Humor man or here in the Northeast Mister Softee were part of your child, if you are of a certain age.

High gas prices, noise restrictions and media accounts of ice cream trucks being used for nefarious purposes  have made the sight of an ice cream truck is a rare occurrence in most neighborhoods.

Captain Ice Cream, a Los Angeles based start-up aims to change all that. Captain Ice Cream is a franchise of 3-wheeled, moped-powered, novelty ice cream vending trucks. The unique size of Captain Ice Cream’s ice cream mopeds allow the franchisee to go where the other ice cream trucks can’t go: deep into parks, farmer’s market booths, parades and other places that are simply impractical for trucks.

The 2010 Ice Cream Mopeds feature a cold-plate freezer that holds approximately 500-600 novelty ice cream treats. You can plug the freezer into any standard 110-volt outlet at night and its internal temperature will drop down to -15°F. The freezer will maintain 0°F for 6 to 8 hours in 100°+F temperatures.

cabcornerAs a born and bred New Yorker who also spent his youth bar hopping and cab hopping in Manhattan, I was intrigued to hear about CabCorner.com.

CabCorner.com is an innovative Internet-based cab share program that aggregates user-generated cab rides and matches riders willing to split a cab and a fare. The service provides a market-based solution for people who want the convenience of a cab for a fraction of the cost. The obvious benefits of cab share include sharing resources, providing an additional transportation option, increasing capacity, easing congestion, and improving fuel efficiency. On top of these benefits, cab share will provide a measure of certainty as the MTA scrambles to plug its $1.2 billion budget deficit.

CabCorner helps its users find cab rides that complement their itinerary. If no such trip exists, users can create a new ride. Traditionally, this type of service has been restricted to blue van shuttles that organize trips by either starting or ending at an airport. By organizing riders by point of origin or destination, it is easy to coordinate a route that picks up or drops off riders along the way. CabCorner, however, casts a wider net than previous services by using the Internet to pool riders who share a common itinerary.

There is a “Hot Spot Map View” that outlines popular locations in NYC where you can meet others and share a cab. There is also a video on the site that explains in detail how the site works.

nerr_logo_3The first American railroad charter was obtained on February 6, 1815, by Colonel John Stevens of Hoboken, New Jersey. Stevens was granted permission by the government to build and operate a railroad between the Delaware and Raritan Rivers near Trenton, New Jersey, and New Brunswick, Canada.

In the last 194 years since Colonel Stevens vision, the entire global transportation system has grown beyond what most people can even comprehend.
