Dealers sell to out of town buyers all the time. It’s not even uncommon these days. If it were me, I would have laughed and hung up. Keep looking, but don’t just randomly call dealers. Go to AutoTempest and search both new and used within your desired radius. See who might actually have one on hand.

No recommendations on dealers, but a really nice site to find the car you are looking for is autotempest.com It will search all the car sites, facebook, craigslist, etc. Much easier.

Look on Facebook marketplace. As much as I hate Facebook, it’s the place to go for cheap e46s. Another help is using autotempest.com. You can specify everything you want in there and it will help you search facebook (and other sites too) and weed out all the part outs and rAcEcArBrO cars.

Start with autotempest.com which aggregates a few sites (cars.com, truecar, Carvana etc.) and provides a jumping off point to autotrader.com and cargurus.com. There you’ll get a sense of asking prices for that year/make/model in your area.

I’ve searched nationwide using autotempest.com, and honestly the only cars cheaper than this are ones that have been in accidents and have rebuilt titles. They’re all going about this price. And I really want a Touring or Premium trim with the leather seats, not a base model.

I’ll say this, I don’t really recommend buying new typically but in this market 2-3yr old cars might be worth close to new cars. That being said, if you can save 20% by buying a car thats 2-3 years old I’d go for that. Buying new you lose money the second you drive it off. Which some people are OK with but I personally am not. Toyota corolla is significantly better than the Hyundai sonata. The Toyota corolla is the best selling car of all time and they are know to be extremely reliable as for value I check autotempest.com . Just enter the car you want the the range you will go to get it and you can compare sell the price of the car across all sites.
