Try running a software like DriveDx. Check the SSD writes in total (TBW). Older SSDs are still good for about 100-200 TBW, depending on their capacity.

The latest version of macOS Ventura is 13.3.1. You also may want to try running Disk Utility First Aid on the drive or DriveDx to see if there’s an issue with it.

My iMac is acting up. I had it UPGRADED to a full SSD instead of a fusion drive which died and I figured it should be even BETTER than it was before but with the newest version of macOS that I have on it (Monterey), it’s just not working well (getting slow). I don’t know what to do. Any thoughts?

macOS freezes with USB drives plugged in.

No it’s not automatically excluded. But if the Mac becomes unresponsive while the drive is connected you may need to run Disk Utility or DriveDx to diagnose the volume.

Since you’re familiar with Activity Monitor, look in the CPU tab and sort the processes by usage. If you aren’t sure what is at the top of that list, running MalwareBytes is worth a shot. You can also use Disk Utility or DriveDx to check the internal storage.

Why am I using so much RAM literally nothing is open except for finder. This is right after restarting.

Gotcha. I really don’t think numbers that low are anything to worry about, but if you’re concerned about SSD usage, you can get smartmontools or (if you prefer a GUI) DriveDX.

Have you checked memory and CPU usage within Activity Monitor? Does Disk Utility report any issues if you run First Aid? How about running Etrecheck or DriveDx?

Did you toggle the Show All Disks? The SSD could be in pre-fail status. If you can boot normally, you can use DriveDx to check how it’s doing.

Late 2020 Mac Mini M1 256GB (Micron vs Hynix LPDDR4 8GB Ram)

By the way… I also was trying to find out which of the 2 Mac Mini M1’s had the better SSD Health and also which had the least amount of “On Time” and “Power Cycles”. Took a bit of searching but found an app that you can download and run vs going the other route (Terminal and a bunch of other steps) and it gives you quite a bit of info including what I mentioned above and also highest/lowest temp Mac has reached,…
