In my opinion the ideal situation would be a backend that any developer could build a frontend to that would suit their approach. For example there are many Retroarch frontends like Highscore, EmulationStation, etc. These all suit the needs for what some person may want.

Replacement for the epic EmuDeck. It utilises EmulationStation.

I use EmulationStation on a lot of devices. It would cover what you’re looking for. Other frontends I like are RetroArch and Daijisho.

If you want to piece meal and customize it RetroArch and Emulation Station is the way to go. Also have a robust wiki.

When I open emulationstation on my computer, it says something along the lines of “no systems detected. Visit emulationstation.org for more details. Any solutions?

There’s Emulation Station. It’s the front end that RetroPie uses. Though I don’t think there’s been any development on it for quite some time. RetroPie might use their own fork. Worth looking into.

Https://emulationstation.org/ – note that it hasn’t had any commits added for a couple of years (not that it really needs any).

So the program that the guy you linked is using isn’t actually RetroArch, he’s using a completely program called EmulationStation which works a bit differently and requires you to download the individual Windows emulators and set everything up a bit more manually. In this particular example, the Youtuber actually has M.U.G.E.N installed normally and is just using EmulationStation to launch it; much in the same way…
