On March 13, 2020, genius.com posted this story about Waka Flocka Flame saying that he would “annihilate” KRS-One and Nas on an 808 beat. Most people who responded found that claim ridiculous. I replied,”What’s the matter with your MC, Waka Flocka Flame/Don’t you know that he’s out of touch?”.

Had to look this one up on genius.com. Apparently the song is about the media frenzy on his family, and the ‘vegetable’ lines is about how they eat you for their sustenance.

I don’t think the cupboard lines have to do with financial status (also used in the genius.com annotation). Why would having snacks and candles make him wealthy if he’s splitting a bean in three?

Okay, so in the official lyric video it says “what was that”, but genius.com is telling me it’s “when I look back”. I don’t know who to believe because it sounds like it could be both of those in the actual song. I actually think lyrically “when I look back” works better. I’d imagine the official lyric video would be the correct lyrics though, but also Genius is a pretty reliable lyric source too.

If you search Genius for “females” the references are almost exclusively negative while if you search Genius for “women” the refernces are much more positive.

I have seen a lot of good stuff, and some pretty dumb stuff, at genius.com song lyrics.

The best way I’ve found to look for the really unique and interesting interpretations is Genius (yes, the lyric website; they have poems on there too!).

Go to https://genius.com/ type “Wish You were Here” in the search box, and you’ll be shown dozens of songs with the same name. Although many of those are covers of the Floyd track, the ones by Incubus and Avril Lavigne are original songs that share the same name.

JT Music – To the Bone Lyrics
Jun 12, 2016
Someday I’ll join the Royal Guard
My brother ain’t nothin’ but harmless
I know you and all that you want
You’ll get a lot more from Sans than a font
The deeper you go, the messier it gets

Same. I am on ao3 not genius.com and unless it’s a completely original song or parodying an existing one I’d rather be on the latter at that point.

I highly suggest listening to the whole album in order, she really lays out the story beautifully in the tracklist the way it is. Also as a neurodivergent person myself, I really hyperfixated on the album so I listened to the songs while reading the lyrics on genius.com (which also explains some metaphors and meanings behind certain lyrics which to me was super helpful to get the whole story!).

Although Rap Genius already does it to a tee, it would be impressive if Apple took its idea and gave lyrics a professional explanation or explanations from the artists themselves. Almost always while listening to a new album I will also have Rap Genius pulled up in my browser and will follow along to the lyrics and look at explanations to the lyrics when if I don’t understand them. Anybody above 40 that wasn’t…
