    • Ask HN: Which “open-source alternatives” have succeeded?

Fairly well known on HN by now but Krita is also excellent and simple image editor and painting app like Photoshop was 20 years ago https://krita.org/en/.

    • Cancel Adobe if you are a creative under NDA with your clients

      Well, there is Serif’s suite: https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/designer/ (There’s also a Photo and page layout app) or the open-source stuff: – https://krita.org/en/ – https://inkscape.org/ – https://www.scribus.net/.

    • Cancel Adobe if you are a creative under NDA with your clients

These are all valid alternatives with real world use, but none of them are Photoshop, and that’s kinda the problem we face. Krita – https://krita.org/en/.

    • Photoshop ToS grants Adobe access to user projects for ‘content moderation’

I migrated away from Adobe after Photoshop CS6 which I believe was the last release before they switched over to a subscription only pricing model. If you’re looking for a Photoshop alternative to break away from the incredibly user hostile relationship with Adobe I can heartily recommend either Krita (open source) or Pixelmator (Mac only). Pixelmator Pro is my daily driver for image related work and is incredibly…

    • Paint.net

Check out Krita[0]. It’s what I used after leaving Windows – a little different, maybe 25% more complicated, but has everything you need. If you just want a MS Paint replacement, KolourPaint[1] is the way to go [0] https://krita.org/en/.

    • Gimp 2.99.18 Released: The Last Development Preview Before 3.0

I’ve been using Krita for a year or so now. At first I found the UI very confusing, but after learning the top bar is just as important as the side bar it really works. YouTube videos of pros using it will blow your mind. It’s really powerful. https://krita.org/en/.

    • A Non-Coders Guide to Open Source Contributions

Through the years I’ve learned how to use some Open Source design tools like Inkscape, GIMP and Krita. While I’m not an expert on this area, I’ve used these tools to create graphics for some of my personal projects, and recently the logo of Let’s Talk! Open Source, that I created using Inkscape.

Looks like it’ll work, mint is Ubuntu/Debian based and I know there are drawing pads out there that work well with Mint also. If you like drawing, I’d suggest checking out Krita.

    • Paint on Windows is getting layers and transparency support

The current Paint.NET is really good and obviously has much more features compared to since the version from 2009. But it’s not FOSS which can be a deal breaker for some. If FOSS then Pinta [0] is the best option imo. GIMP is not bad either but feels very janky and all over the place sometimes (lacking some elementary features while overblown in other departments) Krita [1] is the other one I’d recommend though…

    • Do you think that it’s real? I don’t trust it just even by the fact it costs 2€…

It’s real, but I recommend Krita from the playstore if you want a full mobile drawing/gimp experience. https://i.imgur.com/k7QfUDA.png it’s more packed with stuff, (except the basic ai tools gimp has), works by using KDE for Android, so it feels nice to use with out the Virtual Machine layer the Android GIMP app uses, also works with s-pen and supports bundles from the community to enhance the experience even…

    • LETS GOO! You guys are back, happy to be here again. New taunts, give me ideas! (No particular order)

I use Krita for drawing, I have an assets file for it, each frame is one image I put alphabetically in a folder and Krita uses tabs for each image so you can see comparisons easier and an animated gif maker puts it together where you can choose timings and stuff.

    • SD training

As far as resources, not really. You’d need to do this in an image editor. Assuming you’re not going to pay for photoshop, you can use photopea (with ads on the side) or the free and open source krita or gimp. All three can do the job. My personal opinion is to try photopea first, as there’s nothing to install and it has the most tutorials. Since it’s a webapp, there’s an extension that lets you have photopea…

Nice, great to hear that you’re already on the way. The drawing program I use is Clip Studio Paint. It is now at $50, but I’d recommend getting it only when it’s on sale (I got it for $30), so a good free alternative would be Krita, as I myself have made the jump from Krita to CSP.

I use Photoshop since I’m more used to it, but imo if you want to do concepts like these Krita or Gimp are 100% free and should get the job done just as fine ^^.

Thanks! I can give you a overview of the process. So my friend Ravajava sketched the outline of the continents and islands as well as cities in Clip Paint Studio.
