Miraheze seems to be offering a platform to create private wikis and it runs the same software as Wikipedia. You do need to fill out a form and request a wiki but after that you and people you specify should be able to see and edit that wiki (with the exception of the main page which can be seen by everyone).

For those looking for an alternative to fandom https://miraheze.org is a good choice. Not for profit and they use vanilla mediawiki (what wikipedia uses) instead of whatever abomination fandom has going on.

As for how to make the wiki itself, we use Miraheze. It uses Mediawiki so you can copy templates, modules and css styles from Wikipedia (with some editing to make them work and remove red links and such). You just have to apply for a free wiki with them and they usually approve it in a day or two. Much better than wikia although the hosting can be a bit slow sometimes on account of it running on donations.

I have been recommended several times in the past to switch the Wiki’s hosting to Miraheze, as it has free hosting, and a lot more liberty over the Wiki’s content and authority without the risks that FANDOM might step in and purge it. However, I am not exactly attracted by the design, or visibility on the search engine. Comparison here.

Someone needs to offer mediawiki-as-a-service (apparently https://miraheze.org tries to do this) similar to WordPress. It’s much easier to do “free on fandom” and so lots of them move that way.

There are other wiki farms that are good if one wants to avoid Wikia’s crap. I usually recommend Miraheze [1], which is MediaWiki-based, not-for-profit and ad-free (they run on donations). [1] https://miraheze.org/.

If you’re looking for a good fandom alternative that isn’t plastered with ads, miraheze is one of the better ones. Their list of wikis is here, a lot of them are games wikis that have moved over, but most games wikis tend to stick to fandom just because of the SEO… Miraheze wikis have terrible SEO, they’ll almost never show up in a google search.

Depends on the project, but some website is good for formal publication of entries. A personal Wiki for additional information is also a good idea, and I will never miss an opportunity to talk about how great Miraheze is for this.

Miraheze is an entirely free, open, feature-rich and democratically run wiki hosting network–basically like fandom/wikia without the million ads and the corporate. If you need to run a (media)wiki, they’ll hook you up. The community is very helpful and invested. They’re funded by donations wikipedia-style.
