> But this is not my field. > Would a VPN do what I need? Where are instructions that a n00b can follow? Never used them myself but lots of HN commenters think highly of the VPN services offered by Mullvad [0]. In fact, right now, Mullvad is currently on the HN frontpage [1], from a blog post by Tailscale. 0: https://mullvad.net/en 1:

If you are looking for a tiny, Swedish company working in a similar area as Yubico, there is Tillits AB. Tillitis is a spin off from the Swedish VPN provider Mullvad. In contrast to Yubikeys, The Tillitis TKey as well as tools, device verification etc is 100% open source. https://tillitis.se/ https://github.com/tillitis (Full disclosure: I work for Tillitis.).

– VPNS? Sure. They can be useful. Don’t just download and use any free VPN though! They can steal/collect just as much data as an unprotected WiFi network. ProtonVPN is a newer service offered by the world class ProtonMail team. It has a free tier and is easy to use. Even if you don’t pay for one, definitely use it whenever you’re on any open WiFi connections such as sitting at Starbucks or the airport. You’d be…

I mentioned the BBC, and the same is true there. Without an IP from within the UK, you cannot generally watch BBC iPlayer. However BBC iPlayer has a lot of educational and worthwhile material to consume, so if you aren’t planning to move to the UK just for the ability to watch the BBC online, I would recommend a VPN service. You can generally choose which one you like, but I am would suggest Mullvad for privacy…

Make sure you buy a cheap vpn like mullvad or pia so you don’t get those pesky cease and desist letters from your isp or worse.

First time I ever had to block a merchant via my bank. 2x monthly charges after canceling. Mullvad has been fantastic ever since.

For me, I use Mullvad (https://mullvad.net/en/) as a VPN provider. Only 5 bucks a month (cheaper if you buy a whole year, which I still plan to do) and gives you more anonymity when downloading torrents so your government cant fine you, if your government tracks illegal downloaders.

I’ve been using NordVPN for a couple of years. It’s been working fine however for security and privacy reasons, I’m thinking of switching to https://mullvad.net/en/.

Personally, I use Mullvad (not a referral link), because of their seemingly genuine commitment to freedom of speech and privacy, as well as their location in Sweden. They also accept cryptocurrency as payment, which is helpful as well.

Personally, I use Mullvad VPN (not a referral link, I don’t roll that way) but there are plenty of options out there. I like Mullvad in large part because of their long history of support for free expression as well as their physical location in Sweden (one of the better jurisdictions for privacy).

Have you tried googling? The answer is yes, you will be monitored and persecuted, maybe not the very first time, but don’t risk it. Use a VPN. I recommend mullvad.

Mullvad is probably the most anonymous VPN because you register without an email hence your data is not linked to you.
