I’m not sure what you’re asking. All those things are still out there. There are IRC chat rooms, forums, communities focused on building personal websites, and more. If you’re asking how to feel what you felt all those years ago, I’m afraid you’re out of luck. You can blame the world for changing, but you changed as well. https://neocities.org/.

Https://neocities.org/ Comes to mind. Kagi also has their small web project, which may not be 100% Web 1.0, but leans that way from what I’ve seen. https://blog.kagi.com/small-web https://kagi.com/smallweb.

If you are curious to find more interesting stuff, start here:
– https://mojeek.com/ search engine with own index, totally different results
– https://wiby.me/ another search engine, but “old school” kind of web sites. It does not mean that site cannot be new, but it just looks and feels like old school web pages. Funny way is use that “surprise me…” link there to find something

Neocities has taken steps to try to improve small personal web site discoverability, which ends up being like a platform for people making web sites with a hybrid social component https://neocities.org I like the idea of calling this the small web, I usually go with something like “personal web site” or “home pages” but it’s never quite stuck for me. I hope they’ve added Neocities to the Kagi small web search…

If you’d like some free web space to try it out, I highly recommend Neocities, which provides static reliable website hosting (should say I don’t work for them they just happen to be my web host and have been very good).

It’ll take a bit of legwork to figure out, but Neocities is unironically the best bet for making a free, completely customizable website. It has an HTML editor built into it, and with that you have a lot more freedom to input secret messages through the website, make logins for pages, and stuff like that. As a free user you will have a neocities url, but you’d also have a host dependent url regardless for any free…

Some possibilities: https://search.marginalia.nu/ https://neocities.org/ HN profiles, Gemini, and Web rings too. Mailing lists for projects you may follow¹ could have people’s signatures for their personal website. ¹Prerequisite: my own mail server :).

For those who aren’t familiar with it, Neocities is a site for making old-school websites that you write from hand with HTML, CSS, and Javascript. It has a much steeper learning curve than making a Carrd, but you have an incredible amount of freedom. (Personally, we couldn’t go back to Carrd after using it!).

And for that neocities would be best choice. It started on 2013 and still doing fine, so its not going to disappear tomorrow.

Finally getting around to replying now that most of the comments settled. This was amazing to read. Do you mind if I copy/paste it to a neocities.org site for documentation? With credit ofc. If not no worries!
