looking for newsrover or similar

Try the good old Pan Newsreader. When you click “Get Headers”, you have the choice of the last N days of headers, or just new headers, or All headers, or “Get the latest N Headers”, and you can fill in the number. I think “All headers” starts from the oldest, but I could be wrong.

Yep, you can get a free account at https://www.eternal-september.org/ if your ISP doesn’t carry newsgroups (note it’s for text groups only). Personally, I use Thunderbird as a newsreader (and my ISP still carries most newsgroups), there are also dedicated apps like Pan: http://pan.rebelbase.com/.
