Cocoatech’s Path Finder is much faster to read folder content than any other complex finder like product (Finder, Forklift, QSpace).
If you want even for reactivity, try Marta.

It’s personal preference so I’m not commenting on it. If “file explorer” by your definition is a window with have multiple columns for displaying file hierarchy, file list of current working directory, and file preview, get Pathfinder (https://cocoatech.com/). I myself can never understand why any people with sanity can work in that pesky layout that wastes two/third of screen space.
