I used realtor.com. Realtor.com and trulia.com are updated from the MLS, and Zillow takes a bit longer to update. I have found though that Zillow tends to have better history of the homes.

The most powerful advertising around for real estate is the MLS, and the MLS gets replicated to realtor.com, zillow.com, trulia.com, redfin.com. 97%+ of all transactions start on one of those. If you’re not getting traction on those platforms, paying for print ads isn’t going to improve your situation.

Spouse and I want to buy, and we are looking at listings online separately. Is there a way to alert one another about a prospective property once one of us adds one as a favorite on trulia.com? (kinda like Amazon “add to list”?) We tried using the same username and password on the other device, but the app doesn’t accept it (too many wrong attempts?) and it doesn’t work!

You can find places that rent by the room, where you’ll most likely be sharing a house or apartment with a few other people, sometimes other students, sometimes just people that are already working in their field. Don’t bother checking apartments.com or trulia.com or any of that, which is just a bunch of expensive housing and nothing really by individual owners. Searching “85 3rd St. APT 3, Cambridge, MA 02141” brings up no historical realtor.com, trulia.com, etc. Pages of the unit. There are pages on those websites for this unit, but the page was created/updated on the same day that the unit was listed on Zillow/Craigslist, making me think the scammer is trying to cover their tracks and bring some evidence on to their side that the unit is accurately represented.

You can look for rentals/homes for sale at apartments.com, trulia.com, zillow.com, craigslist.com and I’m sure there are others. It’s unlikely you’ll be able to buy a house anywhere near to where you work unless you have a substantial down payment saved up. Housing here is expensive.

In general, yes. If you want to be sure about the area you are moving into, you can use Trulia (which has crime maps for the apartment you are looking at), or the Chicago Data Portal, which has crime data. trulia.com and https://data.cityofchicago.org/Public-Safety/Crimes-Map/dfnk-7re6.
