HEVC/H.265 video can be stored inside both MKV and MP4 container files. MacOS and Airplay is fairly unknown territory for me, but Videostream for Chromecast is free and has worked very well for me on Windows lately (I write ‘lately’, because developers behind this app ran into problems after a Chrome browser security update about a year ago, but that seems to have been solved now).
