If you are interested and have the time you can watch the 2 videos from the YouTube channel Another Roof[1] on that subject. He spends some time on easy stuff too to allow the general public to relatively understand the bases, so don’t be surprised if the videos are quite long. [1]: https://youtube.com/@anotherroof.

I switched from Svelte/SvelteKit to Svelte/Laravel and my productivity went through the roof. Same would apply with Rails or probably other batteries included backends. SvelteKit gives you SSR but that’s it. Laravel/Rails/etc gives you database, queues, real time support, authentication, authorization, the list goes on. I plan to make my next YouTube video making my case for why Laravel is better with Svelte than…

There’s this guy I met at Maker Faire Tokyo last year who builds walking things (including Strandbeests) out of single-use chopsticks and a dollar-store lint remover for propulsion. If you’re interested, he has a YouTube channel, https://youtube.com/@miseclinic.

Bobby Fingers has a similar vibe, though less family friendly feel. Someone casually doing amazing feats of technical and artistic craft, while making each video a self contained story and having throwaway jokes that are deeper and more complex than the average YouTubers entire career. He also did a crossover episode with Adam Savage the Mythbusters dude as they are apparently mutual fans….

Hey! While I was similar to your child (now a good few years older), I’m not a parent or really knowledgeable in these situations, but I’d highly recommend checking out Dr. K (“Healthy Gamer”). He’s an actual psychiatrist from Harvard and has a YT channel focused on mental health for gamers (https://youtube.com/@healthygamergg) but also for parents, https://youtube.com/@healthygamerfamilies His resources helped me…

Heh I feel called out. I love these kinds of things and don’t publish any music. For me, it’s about the joy of making music. It’s not a performance, it’s a recreational activity. It’s playful. When I want productive music making, with the intention of publishing, a computer with a DAW is the obvious tool for the job. No question. Hands down. Still, there are absolutely people who publish fun tracks and perform…

If you find the idea of electromechanical arcade games delightful (and why wouldn’t you?) and you’re in London then I’d highly recommend visiting Tim Hunkin’s Novelty Automation Arcade (https://www.novelty-automation.com/). They’re all hand made with a satirical sense of humour, just so much fun to see and play with. And check out Tim Hunkin’s YouTube channel for his Secret Life Of Arcade Machines series where he…

The teacher isn’t there to teach – you could do that on your own with enough time and energy. The teacher is there to preserve your passion by making sure you don’t get bogged down in easily-fixable troughs. They will hopefully have knowledge of music such that you’re always excited to play something new rather than feeling like you have to dig through a composer’s works to find something worthwhile. They provide…
