Hi there, I’ve tried hosting a server on my computer and then both my Dad and I try to play together. However, it’s only worked once or twice when I hosted from playtogether.gg or when it worked once with the zerotier.com method. I’ve portforwarded, I’ve made sure both our firewalls were allowing 10578, nothing seems to work. We both have Skyrim Together fully installed on our SSE, and we just want it to work :(…

I lived under a rock, and only today I found a service called Tailscale.com . I think other provider offers the same thing, one alternative seems to be zerotier.com.

I set up EVE-ng on a google cloud VM. Then immediately the question was how do I get access to the lab equip? I found this video explaining how to set up a virtual nic on the eve-ng VM, connect that to a cloud network in eve-ng, then connect mgmt interfaces from your devices to that. Then he used zerotier.com to setup a quick ssl vpn. Now I can turn off all inbound access to the VM and access all my lab…

I would suggest you look into using Zerotier (zerotier.com). It is easy to install alongside the homebridge software. You’ll need the zerotier app from the App Store on the other end but that is about it.

If you want easy private access without needing to opening ports or worry about static ip addresses, you could do worse than to consider one of the newer alternatives – https://enclave.io, https://tailscale.com or https://zerotier.com.

I read other replies and tunneling is one way. There are also some small footprint tools like tailscale.com and zerotier.com.

Then once you’ve done that go back to zerotier.com page and click on your network and scroll down to where it says Members and your machine should be listed. Tick the box under Auth? And then add the name of the machine like Debian NAS so you know which one is which and it should be good to go. The IP address you need to use for SSH should be under Managed IP’s. Works great for me. Works from Windows, Mac, Android…

Something simpler might be https://zerotier.com – they have a free service level and make it really easy to link multiple sites together, might be worth a look?

The title really sums it up. I self host a zerotier server for my endpoints to communicate with, however, after running some packet capture on the host (not server) it is reaching out to root-mia-01, etc all hosted at zerotier.com. I’m a little concerned that the connection is still not exclusively going through the self hosted part. Any thoughts on why this may be, or a correction on my fears?

Research ZeroTier One. It creates a virtual network. Be aware that it is quite difficult to use – the interface is okay but there’s a lot of settings usual people don’t understand.

One option is to use a VPN established as a peer-to-peer overlay network with the vendor. This has the advantage of not needing to run a VPN server, and not needing to open the firewall as the link is established using only outbound traffic on both sides. Have you considered https://enclave.io, https://zerotier.com or https://tailscale.com?

If you’re able to put something like a raspberry pi on the network alongside the CCTV camera you could then use something like https://enclave.io, https://zerotier.com or https://tailscale.com for remote access which would let you ignore the IP.

Install https://zerotier.com/ on all participating computers (also on the Unraid server, it is a docker container). Get an account on https://my.zerotier.com/ to control your networks.

Ah yeah that’s true. I’ve always used Zerotier for all of my game servers, so I never have to deal with open ports and all of the security issues from having it open to the internet. I definitely think VPNs and similar technologies such as zerotier are the way to go with private game servers.

If for some reason you prefer a different solution, I keep hearing great things about ZeroTier. Keep in mind though that it offers nothing over a VPN, and unlike a VPN you can’t put geofencing on it, or have your UDM run IDS/IPS on it.

As a founder, I’ve found time to be one of the most precious resources you have when building a start-up. You might find it useful to look into something like https://enclave.io/, https://tailscale.com/ or https://zerotier.com/ for your private networking requirements – it will be one less server for you to run (and pay for) and will probably save you time too.
